Since Blonde Sunrise has been in the works since 2007, a lot of characters have changed significantly since their initial creation. In some cases the amount of change is quite dramatic. As the story goes on I plan to write several segments about how the characters’ have developed, but for now I’ll start with the most interesting characters introduced in Chapter 2 so far: Kaen and Elayn

The personality of these two characters as well as the role they play in the story have changed dramatically since their initial creation, Kaen in particular.

1. Kaen was going to be another one-eyed lycan

Kaen and Elayn were the first lycans to be designed after Dawn. Since there are both one-eyed and two-eyed lycans I wanted to create more lycan characters of both kinds to show a variety. I ended up scrapping the idea and giving Kaen two eyes for several reasons. Will there be more one-eyed lycans in the story? We will have to wait and see!

2. Kaen originally had a much angrier personality

One of the concept ideas behind Kaen and Elayn was that Elayn was a very cheerful and annoying character while Kaen absolutely couldn’t stand her. As the story continued to be developed I didn’t like the relationship between Kaen and Elayn and wanted them to be more of a duo, so Kaen ended up having a personality similar to Elayn’s. Now instead of Kaen finding Elayn’s shenanigans annoying, everyone else is annoyed by both of their shenanigans.

3. Kaen and Elayn originally had a completely different role in the story than they do now

Though I can’t go into much detail due to the spoiler factor, the initial reason Kaen and Elayn were created in the first place was to have a very specific and serious role in the story. The more and more I developed them as characters though I realized their role didn’t really fit them at all. They now have a much funner role than they originally had and I created a fourth lycan character to take over the role they were supposed to have.

Though Vince has also had a lot of development since his initial creation, he still serves the role Kaen and Elayn were supposed to have, as well as several additional roles. What is this role exactly? We will find out later in Chapter 2!
